I've framed around the exterior walls of my basement. I will be framing a partition wall in a few weeks which will include framing for interior doors. My plan is to buy pre-hung doors, I have seen they only come in one standard height - which would require a framing height of 82 1/2". My problem is my basement ceiling height is 84". I am not able to frame a proper header for the door.

Can I get a custom pre-hung door will a smaller height? If not, how would you suggest to frame for the opening?

Since it is a non load bearing wall, your requirements for a header will not be as crucial. As long as the door frame is secure, you should be fine. You can always cut the bottom of the door and frame, the only downside is the knob will sit lower.

Since the framing is in the basement there is no load bearing on the wall, and this would indicate that a 2x4 header would be sufficient. With the 2x4 laid flat the door frame can be 82" in height which would allow installation of the pre-hung door.

Hey Sean,

You think you have a height problem. I had 79" from floor to joist to work with. I put a dropped ceiling in giving me a walk around height on carpet of 76". Needless to say we don't invite our favorite Phila. 76'ers over for drinks.

My doors slabs are cut 73 1/2" with 3/4" frame and whatever space is left I built up. For instance, one header is a 2 x 4 on it's side shimed out to hold the frame.

Don't forget, Sean, if you buy pre-drilled doors for locksets and you cut off the bottom of the door, your going to lower your door knob.

Good luck and don't stoop.
