We are in the process of buying a home. The home inspector gave the home a thumbs up but recommended a sump pump in the crawl space because of evidence of past flooding. The damage had been professionally fixed so it would be a preventative measure. The previous owner had a sump pump sitting in a milk crate in the crawl space at one time. Is this a good idea or do I need to dig a reinforced pit for the pump?

- sump pump in the crawlspace
is not exactly an appropriate container for the sump.
How do you keep the pump from clogging with mud and debris?
I'd recommend you to dig a hole big enough to fit a nice sturdy plastic sump liner with lid in the lowest corner of the crawl space.
You said the crawl space was professionally fixed?
I can't help but think: what kind of professional would fix a crawl space and leave a sump pump in a milk crate?
