I have an outside stairway to the basement on the back side of my house with a drain at the bottom of the steps that drains under the basement floor to a sump pump. My problem is this - we have several honeylocust trees in the front of the house with small leaves that will, along with grass clippings, other leaves,... blow to the bottom of the steps and stop up the drain during a hard rain. Sometimes we catch it and often times we don't. Of course, when we don't and there is a hard rain the drain stops up with the leaves and grass clippings and the water runs under the basement door into the basement. Building a roof over the steps is not really an option due to the house design. I would like to finish the basement but with water running in under the door 4-5 times/year cannot. Anyone have any ideas?
