I live in the New York metro area and am planning to use vinyl siding on the outside of my house, partly to replace cedar shingle siding, and partly over new construction. Walls have insulation between studs, and Tyvek is wrapping the house. Do I need insulation under the siding as well?

I think I would. It can't be that much more expensive and it seems like it would be that much more insulation on your house.

By the way I'm not a builder!

No. Eighty percent of the heat loss in a house occurs thru the roof. Insulating in this case is overkill.
