A friend of mine is drilling exterior holes in his old house through asphalt shingles to prep for blown in insulation. He's using spade bits but is hitting nails. It's slow going. Any advice on a better drill bit to use? He's drilling through about 3 inches of mostly wood but does hit nails as well.

you can use a self feed bit providing you have a large enough drill to pull. the smallest self feed is 1-1/8 in and will need at least a 1/2 in drill to pull. you could also use just a regular hi speed drill bit.
