We are always trying to reduce heat loss in the house and I saw a draft cap for the attic stairwell in one of the home improvement magazines. Basically, it's a polystryene foam box that fits over the opening to the attic. It costs about $100.

Does anyone have one and do you think it's worth the cost?

Thanks.

their website is www.draftcap.com

Hi Tammy,

I don't have personal experience with this product; so I can't recommend or not.

But I have had (in a previous home) an attic access. I insulated it by gluing foamboard insulation and insulation batts to the access. It worked pretty well.

I also wonder if you could approximate the capability of the device you sent by building a similar styled "cap" using foamboard and duct tape. It wouldn't be nearly as elegant (if you care about such things in your attic), but it would be a lot cheaper.

Regards,
