- deer and shade plantings
Hi Judy,
My wife sure grapples with this problem in her garden (mostly a rock garden).
You wouldn't happen to be in the Rockies, would you?
I'd recommend a plant society--possibly one of the NARGS (National Assn of Rock Garden Societies). You might have a local chapter. These folks grapple with deer (and other) problems all the time.
My wife has pretty much given up on most deer-resistant advice and is planting thornier and thornier stuff. The problem is, when the deer get hungry, they seem to eat just about anything.
And if they tromp through your plantings, they cause about as much destruction. So keeping the area unappetizing is a good thing.
And to listen to my wife, if it's not the deer, it's other problems....squirrels, rabbits, etc.
Good luck; this is a tough one.
Regards,
