You will find that there is no caulk on an old french door. The glass is held in with decorative moulding on one side, probably the outside. Try using a razor knife along the outside edge of the moulding around the pane to cut away multiple layers of paint. Once you find which side you can remove, cut the rest of the paint away and very carefully remove the moulding with a 5 in one tool or stiff putty knife. Be careful not to break the moulding as it will be impossible to replace. Set in your new glass, replace moulding and repaint.

You will find that there is no glazing, the glass is held in with decorative moulding. Use a razor knife to remove some of the many layers of paint where the moulding touches the outer edge of the of the individual frame. Carefully remove moulding with a 5 in 1 tool or stiff putty knife. Be careful not to break moulding it will be impossible to replace. Put a thin bead of caulk on the edge that the glass will lay on when installed to prevent air inifiltration and replace moulding. May have to repaint to cover the fact that the moulding was removed.
Sorry about the repeat postings, clicked on post reply button and got message that it wasn't going to go thru. Tried a couple times. Ooops got posted a couple times.
the french doors are on the inside of the house, and they have been stripped before. it is solid wood. so is there any way to get the glass out?
Hopefully the glass is held in using moulding. You will have to use a stiff putty knife to see if you can loosen the moulding, check both sides, see if you can force the putty knife in between the moulding and the mullion on the door. If not, don't know what to tell you. If the door is old I doubt if glue was used to hold the moulding on. Inspect the area around the glass to find any little evidence that moulding is nailed down. Using moulding is the only way glass could have been installed.
