My contractor said that I should collapse the existing frame versus putting the new window over the frame, as we need to see if there is any leaking from the old window--and fix it if so. Also, putting a new vinyl window over the alum. window would make the window smaller. Is this smart? What should I ask themk--to make sure they do a good job? For example, will they put in new flashing? Etc. etc.??? Thanks!

References from past customers on similar work is what you should ask for. With your limited knowledge, you could just be a pain in the butt, trying to inspect his work as he does it. That implies a lack of trust. Do refs first to build trust, then stay out of his way.

His advice so far sounds right on, for what information you are able to give.
