We are gutting and rebuilding a home in the SF Bay area. We've met with several contractors who recommend vinyl clad windows as opposed to wood windows, especially since we are painting all windows white. They site functionality and cost as reasons to go with vinyl clad. A decorator friend of ours, on the other hand, is strongly opposed to vinyl. She says wood windows would look considerably better in our home than vinyl clad. Our home is traditional in style. We've heard that vinyl windows can look "cheesy" or "cheap". The cost difference is sizeable, but we don't want the look of our house to suffer. Are vinyl clad windows noticeably different than all-wood? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

you can look nto vinyl clad wooden windows. A bit more expensive, but you never have to paint the white outside and you can stain the wood for the interior.

Vinyl clad windows would be like having the quality of wooden windows, but you don't have to worry about painting the outside of them. They are about top of the line windows, so they will be expensive. Go to your local library and ask for a copy of the Oct 2000 Consumer reports magazine, it has a write up of replacement windows. Do lots of research and learn all you can.

Check out Anderson replacement windows. The price should not be that bad and they have a great warranty.

If you're concerned about how a vinyl window will look, why don't you go and see them for yourself? There's no need to take others' word for it.
There's no reason why you can't pick out a particular style and then go see how it looks installed on a house that has that.
