I have a ceiling light that works fine with the switch and dimmer. I took it down and went to put up the new one and realized there were 2 whites (hooked together) two blacks and one red wire coming from the ceiling. I notice that one of the black wires is always hot when the breaker is on even when the switch is off. I have tried multiple ways to hook up the red adn two black wires to the one black wire of the light fixture. I have the two whites from ceiling and white from light fixture hooked together. If I hook up all 3 blacks light works but switch will not turn it off. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks
Heidi

Thanks for the advice, I tried this and it does not turn on. I can get it to turn on when I have the hot black (one that is always hot even when switch is off) to black on fixture but then it will not turn off with switch. Any other ideas?
I wish I would have paid attention to how it was wired to the one I took down but I have never replaced one that had extra wires like this from the ceiling.

all three black wires connected (two from celiing and one from fixture) and the 3 white wires connected turn on the light but the switch will not work. I just capped the red one. I have tried putting the red with the white and the black to see if that gets the switch to work.

There is one switch it has a red green and black. There is one more red but it is not connected to anything and has a tag that says "this wire is only used in 3 way installations".

The switch is connected to one green, one black and one red that doesn't go anywhere.

This option the red to the black on fixture, two blacks from ceiling together and 3 whites together, doesn't work at all. The light will not come on.
