can I put a new metal roof over top of the existing asphalt shingles that are 19 years old ? Or is that a big no no ?

Yes, you can install a new metal roof over an existing roof. It does vary by manufacturer though, so you should check the info provided by the metal roof brand.

Two other key considerations:

1. How many layers of asphalt are we talking about? The manual or instructions should indicate the max amount allowed. Related, there's only so much your roof / home can support. When in doubt, call the brand's customer service line.

2. Would your local city or building codes constrict your ability to install a metal roof over top of the asphalt?
