I have a 1/2hp *****/Craftsman GDO (circa '94) that has quit working. It is a chain driven unit with a spindle on top that will turn for a second and then stop (motor continues). I put a little lube around the spindle and on the chain but no improvement. I suspect the mechanism is worn out. Anyone ever service this or I am wasting my time? Any good suggestions for a replacement brand/model?
Thx,
Brian

- Is my GDO worn out?
When I took the housing off I noticed many of the teeth from the gear that run the chain were sheared off. Now if I can just find a replacement part...
Hello Bteddie,
Please remember always to treat garage doors with a great deal of respect.
Your garage door should run smoothly and with a fairly light touch, even without the opener. Always remember that it's the springs and mechanism that make it look as easy as it looks--NOT the GDO.
PLEASE, NEVER let kids play around the door. As tempting as this is for kids, please let them know it's not a toy. A garage door can weigh 400 pounds!
That said, hopefully your fix will be quick and easy. And SAFE.
