what does my tree have?

I have moss looking stuff growing on some my trees. What is this and how can I get rid of it? My trees are dying from this.

What type of tree is it? What state do you live in? Is it a spanish type moss hanging from the limbs of the tree or is it a green moss on the trunk of the tree? How are your trees dying from it? Dead branches? Rot?
