i am a new home owner and would like to change my oil boiler to gas, are there any good recommendations as far as what kind of unit to install that are not too pricey and with high energy star efficiency rating and just good ones from maintainability?

also, what are the price ranges for a good one or high end.

i just spent a bundle on the house, just want to be knowledgeable when a professional comes around talks about boiler conversion.

You want to first inspect the boiler to make sure it is good condition and and properly sized for the house.
If all is well there then you will need to confirm you gas available.
The best value will be with a Carlin Model # EZ, this gas burner ranges from 50,000 to 275,000 btu's. This should cover your requirements, ( the burner size must match the existing oil burners btu's) the boiler and flue pipe are sized for a given amount of exhaust and you do not want to over fire it.
The cost will depend on what part of the country you live in( cost of living has wide ranges) A budget number in the mid-atlantic area would be in the $2ooo.oo range.
Another brand is Riello , series 40 and will cost a little more.

I hope this helps.

In most civilized areas there will have to be an asbestos abatement program sett up where the old boiler and related piping are removed.

Also considering natural gas is a dry fuel and oil is considered a wet fuel the chimney will have to have a certified chimney sweep make sure there is no residue soot in the flue /chimney which can cause an acidity reaction and eat away the lining.

#2 oil is rated between 138,000 - 140,000 per gallon Natural gas is 900 -1,200 BTU per cu foot so you had better find out the size of the oil burners nozzle now to get some idea of your heating needs

I cannot see how anyone can guess how big a one family boiler needs are as I recently installed a One million eight hundred thousand HB Smith boiler in a one family home

Is this boiler going to have a tank less coil for heating domestic hot water, what are the EPA rules in your are about oil tank removal?

Has anyone from the utility (gas supplier) mentioned changing just the burner rather then a total boiler replacement?

There are many factors to consider before switching from oil to gas such as pay back period and who is going to service the boiler / burner?

Is this system hydronic of vapor (steam)
