my main sewer line is clogged in an old house on city sewer. can't find the pipe after it comes out of the wall from the basement. trying to tap into it, instead of replacing the whole line.

Trying to tap into an old sewer line GREAT idea .. It would also be an outstanding idea to tell what type of material your old sewer line is, service weight cast iron XHCI , PVC , or other type of material

Most decent plumbing helpers would clear the line prior to taping into it

One of the easiest approaches to cleaning a main sewer line is to remove a fixture such as a toilet ABOVE the stoppage then get a 3/4 x 100 ft snake with an arrow head and start snaking the line very slowly

Once the line is flowing then use a larger cutting head as hot water is running from a shower or basin to

1- clean the snake wire

2- establish that there is flow out of the main

3- Then install a "Y" at a 45 deg angle to the out let Or get a clean out Tee so the line can be either snaked or water jetted up or down stream
