We built a new home equipped with a high efficiency Rheem furnace located in the basement of a one story 1200 ft sq house. Our cold air duct intake vents are extremely loud in the initial start up (like a 747 taking off), the next phase the sound kicks down a bit but is still loud and disruptive to sleeping at night.
Removing the cold air vent covers does not change the noise level. The furnace filters are changed on a regular basis.

Anyone bother to do a calculation of the CFM's going though the ducts return or supply?

Did someone make a solid connection of the duct materials and did not install a vibrations eliminator.

I could never understand why someone who is investing in a new home would dare used scorched heating instead of the more efficient and more comfort offered by a hot water system

We had a heating consultation on the benefits vs. cost of one system over the other (forced air vs hot water); factoring in the house size, efficiency and overall long term operational cost and savings.

As far as CFM and vibration eliminator; I will investigate the contractors specs in this regard.

Thank you for your informative comments.

Can you tell me what the distance is from the return grill in the house and the furnace?
Is the duct metal or flexible?
Let me know and we can try to help you out with it.

The air duct work is metal not flexible. As stated above our home is 1200 sq ft serviced by 3 cold air returns. Measuring from the top of the furnace (9 foot basement ceiling) to the utility room approx. 10.5 feet, the bedroom 11.5 feet, the great room 14.5 feet.

I have checked the outside furnace venting, there are no obstructions. Also the furnace was professionally cleaned this fall of 2013.

I should clarify the furnace venting. The hot air venting is metal. The hot air is serviced by metal duct work from the furnace to the floor vent. The cold air duct work from the furnace is metal BUT where it branches off the main line to the room(s) it appears use the floor joists are the side walls, the sub floor as the top. The bottom of the venting joist(s) are enclosed with a sheeting that has a metallic skin.

Thanks again, Duane.
