Up in the attic of a 1932 home in Alabama. Was remodeled in 2004 and has changed hands twice since then--doesn't look like insulation was replaced though--only a very thin covering. Inspector noted that the insulation was sparse and the type was old mineral wool--told us how easy it would be to lay new insulation strip over it.

Insulation is soft, cotton-like, black, white, and gray.

Anyone seen this before? We are having it tested but curious in the meantime what it is.

Impossible to tell from that picture.
If your going over it then use blown in,, not batts.
Make sure you air seal anyplace where wiring or plumbing goes through the tops of the walls or ceilings first.
Add baffles to make sure the insulation does not block soffit vents.
