I currently live in a ranch and would like to add square feet to my living room, entrance, and bedroom in order to gain living space as well as space for a closet and bath in master bed
I've exhausted all other options as well as getting plans by an architect for a second floor
The ranch sits on a foundation with full basement. Do I have to do the same for addition or could addition sit on a slab? The addition would be a literal perfect rectangle no funky stuff and I would recycle my windows as they are fairly new

The 1st thing you should do is check with your local property code enforcer to see what the requirements are.
They can tell you better about using a slab versus a foundation.
Thanks

Deciding on a slab or crawl space foundation that could also be determined by the existing floor elevation of the house. for example if it is 2' above grade you would want to match the existing floor elevation, this would best be done on a crawl space, no need for a basement.
Thanks,
Duane
