What's the best type of foundation for wet, muddy soil, known in Alabama as prairie mud?

I've considered building a compaction pad and pouring a slab, I've considered building on concrete piers, even a slab with post tension slab cables, and a more conventional foundation with deep footers, concrete outer walls with pier support in the middle.

Suggestions? what's the best method to avoid foundation problems... but also coming in at a reasonable cost?

I'd appreciate any experienced advise.
