Our house is 50+ years old and our water heater is 30+ years old. When we turn on the hot water anywhere in our house we hear a very loud knocking noise that persists for about a minute and wakes up our sleeping children.

It's been suggested to us that our hot water pipes are bracketed too tightly not allowing for proper expansion. It has also been suggested that since our water heater is lacking a modern flushing mechanism, sediment build-up in the unit may get jostled when we turn on the hot water causing a vibration in our line.

Any helpful DIY tips to solve this problem would be greatly appreciated.

If this started in the past few months it is most likely a lose washer or a swing check valve that needs to be replaced

I doubt it is from the coefficient of expansion per degree of piping after all this time
