We are builing a home in Minnesota and searching for exterior doors. The front door will have southeast exposure and a 3 foot covered overhang. All of the door manufacturers we have searched do not have fiberglass/composite doors in the style we are looking for. Does anyone have a recommendation for maintaining and protecting wood doors in the harsh climate of the midwest? Thank you!!!

About the only thing I can think of might be spar varnish (like you'd use on an all-wood boat) but it will amber with age. Anyone else with an idea?

In addition to paint/varnish solutions...

How about a storm door? They're a bit of a pain to put in, but it's $200 well spent. (Paint's not cheap either!) We've had one in for several years now and we really like it. For one thing, when it's sunny out you can open your front door and catch some of that warm spring SE sun.

In my climate (also rather harsh), I change the glass for screen around Memorial Day (and back around Labor Day). A nice summertime bonus.

Just an idea!
