Consumer's Original Complaint :
I have sent two letters to this company dated 2/12/06 and 3/5/06 and have recieved no response.The following is a copy of the first letter with the information that you request.
To whom it may concern
We had our home built in 1988 by Huttner Homes. Semco windows were used through out the house. About six or seven years later the windows began to fog up between the panes. I called your warranty department and was told that they were no longer warranted and assumed I am stuck with them. The number of bad windows grew at about one a year and now have 12 bad windows. I recently talked to a glass company about the problem and was informed that Semco had problems in the late 1980's. I was told the sealant that was used did not work properly and you had a year or two of defective windows.
I have those windows and would like to hear from you on this matter.

04/16/2006 BBB MORE INFO RECEIVED FROM THE CONSUMER : I have not heard from this company as of 4/16/06.I would like them to contact me so we can try to reach some sort of agreement. My first choice is they replace the defective windows. My second choice would be they supply the windows and I will install them. My final option would be to pursue legal action perhaps a class action lawsuit. RESPONSE: We recieved the complaint filed by Mr. Kretzmann. We regret that Mr. Kretzmann has had an unusual experience with our windows. Semling-Menke Company, Inc. has manufactured quality products and supported our warranty for our products for over 65 years. Our windows and patio doors are built to meet or exceed industry standards. An independent test lab certifies compliance with industry standards.
We do not have any record of Mr. Kretzmann contacting our company regarding seal failures with the insulated glass. We do have record of Mr. Kretzmann requesting replacement of 4 casement dual arm operators on June 18, 2004.
Mr. Kretzmann states that his home was built in 1988. Our warranty for insulated glass manufactured at this time was 5 years. Mr. Kretzmann estimates that the seal failures occurred 6 or 7 years after his home was built. He further states that the failures occurred at a rate of one per year for a total of 12 seal failures. Based upon this information, we estimate that one unit failed in 1994 or 1995, with one addtional unit allegedly failing each year after that.
The warranty on the insulated glass units in Mr. Kretzmann_home expired in 1993. As stated earlier, we do not have any record of Mr. Kretzmann contacting us until February 12, 2006, 18 years after Mr. Kretzmann built his home, and 13 years after the warranty expired.
Also note that Mr. Kretzmann has been misinformed as Semling-Menke Company did not have any significant problem with insulated glass units manufactured in the late 1980_
We regret that we are not able to process Mr. Kretzmann_request for replacement insulated glass as the warranty expired in 1993. Please contact me if you have any other questions.

I did inquire about this problem many years ago but did not pursue it as I was told that the warranty had expired. After many years and many more windows gone bad I have looked into replacing them. That is when I was told by another glass company of the problems that these windows have. I ask that Semco windows work with me to resolve this issue. At this time I can not prove there was a problem with these windows but I hope that Semco windows will make an effort to build a healthy reputation by standing by its product and address their customer concerns. I realize that many years have passed and that I should have pursed this before now but the fact is they are Semco windows and many of them have failed. I am willing to work Semco windows to reach a mutal agreement but they have not contacted me as of 5/8/06. I hope to hear from Linda Semling so we can discusse this matter.

I would NEVER use Simco windows I too have had all my windows go foggy. My home is upscale and now I have to replace the windows through out my home. The house was built 13 years ago and the fogging started about 4 years ago and now I have to replace them. I have contacted Simco, but they do not stand behind their product and will only guarantee 1/2 of the replacement cost. Why would I use this product again. BUYER BEWARE!!! DO NOT USE SIMCO WINDOWS!!!!
