I borrowed a friend's mower to tackle a huge weed/grass problem in my backyard. It's been raining much more than normal, so after about 3 days of no rain, I gave it a shot. As I checked the catch bag with my toe, it never seemed to get any heavier (fuller). After it quit, I checked the gas and filled it up and tried again. The grass was well over 2' tall.

After adding gas, the mower started briefly but kept dying. I tipped the mower back and cleaned out the grass underneath. I made sure that the discharge chute (right word?) was clear, and hosed out underneath the mower to remove what was left.

I let the mower sit for a couple of hours, but when I went to start it, it started (reluctantly) and only stayed running for about 5 seconds before dying.

Can anyone give me suggestions? It's a Craftsman Eager 1 4.5 HP mower. I don't know anything about it or how old it is or if it's been serviced. I don't want to have to buy my friends a new mower!! Yikes. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!!

I am wondering if there is grass wrapped around the shaft that the blade is attached to. I know that happens on string trimmers sometimes, so it could happen on a mower too. If you turn the mower over (be very careful, it can kill you! keep children, dogs, fingers and other body parts out of the path of the blade as much as possible!) and look, you should be able to see the shaft coming down from the engine. Obviously the mower should not be running when you do this, and I would recommend pulling the cable off the spark plug first, just in case.

If you can't find anything, take it to a small engine repair place. These places specialize in fixing mowers, trimmers, chainsaws, etc. I am sure you have one nearby. They should be able to clean out whatever's jammed or clogged up for a lot less than buying a new mower.

Have them do a clean and overhaul the mower while it's in there - your neighbor will appreciate it. :-)
