I have a Marvin Steel entry door with a wood grain pattern already stamped into it. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience in staining these and could recommend a product to use. I tried a package "deal" made specifically for staining steel doors and it looked like crap, like I put a jelly on it. I could see the primer through it. I read somewhere on the net you can make your own stain by using artists paints and mineral spirits, but am a little nervous about trying a mixit yerself thing. I want it to look like a hand rubbed wood door. Am I dreaming?

I use Minwax gel stain for wood, fiberglass and metal along with a graining tool or dry brush technique. Just work with the stain until it looks right, allow to dry and cover with exterior grade spar urethane. All of this is available at home improvement stores. I have used this techniqe to restore badly weathered wood (oak) as well, with less sanding preparation.

Can the gel stain be used to redo a door already stained?

We have a Taylor steel door with wood grain finish and we stained it in the walnut with the kit. It is quite faded now and we want to darken it again. We are having trouble getting info on the kit we used originally.

I stained my fiberglass door with gel stain and am not happy with how it came out does anyone know how to repair this? Can I have it sanded and then try the stain again?

The color of the door is darker than I wanted how can I stain over this and make it lighter. If I wanted to have it done professionally would you ask a painter or is there specialists in this field. Any recomendations
