Our front door opens into the family room. I replaced the doors and windows in the house in the mid-90's, so now although I wish I had chosen a door with a window in it, I am opposed to replacing the door itself, especially as we will be putting the home up for sale soon.

I had the inspiration this morning that possibly I could install a fixed window ABOVE the door - hence allowing more light in without disturbing much of the room itself. Currently between door molding and the drop ceiling there is 10" of space. Any ideas/comments?

Unfortunately, there is probably a structural header there that would be very invasive and expensive to avoid, re-routing the load paths.

depending on the style of door you have, it may be posssible to install a lite in it.

Excellence is its own reward!

Thank you; I forgot about such things as headers. :/

The door itself is steel, so I assumed installing a window would be impossible, or at least more expensive than purchasing a new door.
