I rent an apartment and the blinds in my son's room were there when we moved in. They appear to be unfinished plain wood blinds...we've been here for almost a year, but I just noticed yesterday that the blinds have a smell to them at times...almost like maple syrup. It's very odd and I wonder if the smell is more pronounced when it is humid out. At any rate, is this normal for an unpainted wood product? I am concerned because my kids sleep next to the windows. Thanks!

- Question about blinds
Hi,
Just ran across your question today and I have the answer for you! I'm a contractor and I've installed my fair share of blinds. Depending on your climate natural wood blinds can mold! I've seen this all over the US and Canada. I would suggest getting rid of those especially because they are in you child's bed room. Mold can cause all sorts of respiratory issues especially in children and the elderly.
I suggest using a Faux Wood blinds. Faux wood blinds are basically fake wood that looks real. They are more durable than real wood and more cost effective. Here is were I buy my faux wood blinds for my clients with your problem: Faux Wood Blinds (if you live in Canada) or Faux Wood Blinds for US customer.
They have Free Shipping and everyday low pricing with free samples before you buy. This is a great way to go!
Cheers,
