I am moving into an apartment on the third floor of a three family and the staircase will allow a queen size mattress up the stairs but not a box spring. I have heard people say they have build a bedframe that can be used in place of a box spring?

Has anyone done this? Does it work well? How is it done?

Sears has a unit you can purchase and build yourself that would give you a bed frame. It's mostly pine. You'll probably want to carry up the pieces a bit at a time and then put it together in the bedroom. It includes drawers in the bottom. You can use it with box springs, but if using just with a mattress, you'll need to order the platform. If you want to attach your own headboard, you'll need to order special brackets from the company that sends the bed to you. Once it's done, you may not be able to move it out without taking it apart -- so keep that in mind as you put it together. You may want to adapt the installation to help you down the road. It's very sturdy. We built one for a friend and used two sets for a total of twelve under bed drawers. Hope this helps. You could probably find this on sears.com.
