This time of the year you should find an "end of the season" or fall fertilizer.It is designed to give the lawn what it needs to get through winter without loading the soil with more than required.Ask at a dealer for specifics.Next spring you should consider having the soil tested ( I use my states extension service) to find out exactly what your particular lawn needs and when to apply.
Also,applying fertilizer as close to a rainy day as possible will help prevent any possible problems with pets and children.
