Hi!
I am planning on replacing my asphalt driveway soon. I live just south of Lake Ontario in NY state.
I was told that my current driveway does not have any base. Now rocks are breaking the surface and there are may places sinking (where the car sits).
What I am looking for is advice on how I know that the contractor I choose to install the new driveway is installing a quality one and doing it correctly.
What is a good base material and how thick should it be?
How thick should the asphalt be?
How course should the asphalt be?
Any other preparations?
Thanks for you help.
Thanks for you help

When the old driveway is removed, have them take out any rocks bigger than 1" diameter. Then they should compact the soil. If the yard is fairly flat, I would have a 3" bed of compacted, coarse gravel put down for drainage. Put in as much asphalt as you can. The biggest areas concern with asphalt driveways are at the connection with the road and the garage. Here tiny differences in elevation mean the car drops down onto the driveway. Over the course of several years, a low spot will develop. In the house I grew up in (Niagara County), puddles in these low spots would freeze and start to tear up the asphalt. If you can only afford a 3" asphalt layer, maybe you can have the contractor put in a 4" band 3 foot wide at the garage.

david_wv,
When you say course gravel, do you mead
3/4" rough edge stuff?
Should the gravel be placed over a 3" layer of compacted sand?

Thanks again.
