WANT TO CHANGE COLOR OF FORMICA KITCHEN COUNTERTOPS .. BEING TOLD BY "ALL" REMODELERS THAT NEED TO CHANGE ENTIRE COUNTERTOP, NOT JUST FORMICA .. MO ONE CAN GIVE ME A GOOD REASON EXCEPT TO SAY IT MAKES A BETTER JOB THAT THEY CAN THEN WARRENTY ..

Generally, yes, its better to replace the underlayment as well as the formica. You don't want to remove the old formica. In some circumstances, you can put new formica over old if the old is in good condition. This isn't a good idea though! I don't blame a pro for refusing to do this. Its actually more work for the pro.

In some cases you cannot do it at all. If the top rolls over to the front edge and rolls up into the backsplash. Those are post-formed and must be done in the factory using high heat and pressure.
