I am remodeling a bedroom with a ceiling that currently is finished with a "cottage cheese" accoustical coating typical of this period. I wish to remove this "finish" and get back to the smooth drywall underneath. Can anyone give me some advice on the quickest, easiest and cleanest way to do this? Thank you in advance for your advice.

That depends on what was used to achieve this look. I've use sponges and wallboard compound to achieve a stucco effect. If this is the application, you need to use a 90 degree paint scraper and bring it down to an acceptable level. Wear Gloves.

If it's the sprayed-on "popcorn" stuff you're talking about, I've used a plastic squirt bottle of water and a wide putty knife. And it is slow and very messy but at least that stuff doesn't stain. If you do it, you'll be glad you did in the long run.
