Which of the two is the better buy?

Craftsman 5 hp for $298.88
-----------or------------
Craftsman 6.5 hp for $419.88

General use would be for washing the deck, cars, siding...nothing major.

Do you recommend any other brand names?

It all depends on the pressure and the GPM on which would be the best for your use.

The psi or amount of pressure is what I look for. A smaller unit of around 1200 psi is fine for cars, but if you are looking to blast a wasp nest out of your second story gables look for something around 3000 to 4000 psi.
If you opt for the smaller unit give the detergent or chlorine enough time to work without dring out.
