how many screws for drywall
What's a good rule of thumb to use on how many screws to put in a sheet of gypsum? 4 screws per stud and screw every other stud maybe????
Hi busterw,
It's great that you're saving some $$$ by doing the work yourself.
Now, go out and spend some of that $$$ on a GOOD , general home maintenance book. Time/Life and Reader's Digest (among others) are a good investment.
I could give you the answer but do this for yourself. It's $$$ well spent.
My best to ya and hope this helps.

PS: Screw into EVERY stud, 8" apart, at the corners and seams. A good book will teach you how to mud too ...
Jay, not sure I agree with you on a good book teaching you how to mud!!! I have a couple that tell you how, but the teaching is all in doing it over and over and over agin. After doing my basement, I wonder if the $$$ spent would not have been better! I would be completed by now!
jbfan,
"doing it over and over again" just isn't an option for everybody. Most of us do various DIY things only a few times in a lifetime. (That's why there are questions like the one that prompted this post.)
Jay is right - a good book is priceless - money well spent. And you can always go to a library and borrow books for free.

Well since nobody in this forum will answer directly, I called a drywall manufacturer and asked the question. I was told to put screws on every stud and put a screw every 6 to 8 inches apart. So, that's the answer. To those who were interested in getting the answer, there ya go. To those that wanted to teach a lesson like a 4th grade teacher and tell us to go read to find the answer, thanks for nuthin'.
Thanks to those who care!

You never needed to call the mfr.
Jay's very first response answered the question in the "PS". It says:

Everything after that was just discussion about whether books are worthwhile or not.
I don't think that was in the original post. However, I could be wrong. Since Joed not myself I think the original post was edited later to include the P.S but it doesn't matter. If I'm wrong, I apologize for lashing out. Regardless, now we have the answer from 2 sources, Jay and the manufacturer.
Thanks!
