have a very large tree growing 20 ft from house. the roots have already cracked up the cement patio and are headed toward house foundation. i'd like to keep the tree but how can i keep roots from getting to foundation?

The only other thing and we did the same thing and tree has lived is cut the root or roots that are making the damage and take them out of the ground because they can regrow ive heard, try not to take out to many.

retisin: thank you. you say you've removed roots and the tree didn't die? i live in tornado alley and worry tree would weaken, or die, if i remove the roots.

What kind of tree?Mine was pine but they are really tuff and can hol up to alot of abuse.Remember the main tree root goes straight down like a molar tooth. They also have a # of big branched roots coming off from this which is what you are having problems with.If it is this big i really doubt it will weaken this tree,it has these massive roots growing all over.

it's a maple tree. i didn't know the main root grows straight down. that lessens my worry. it's about 70 feet tall, it should have a real good main root then. guess i'll be spending my vacation next month digging up roots. thanks for responding and pardon me for my delay, i'm an over the road truck driver and am gone 2 to 3 weeks at a time.

You have to make a choice. Leave it alone and let the roots do their damage. Cut the roots and hope the tree is not too severely damaged. Remove the entire tree.

Not a problem don't take too many at 1 time this may kinda be like giving blood if you gave half your blood to the blood bank, you'd have problems, same with the roots just take what you think is best, and maybe save the littles one's that aren't hurting or big enough yet for next year.Remeber that big one is probably like a main artery, sounds like it is big around as a normal mans upper forearm so it is important to this tree, but it isn't the only one.
If you've ever up rooted a tree or see one blown down that bill ball on the bottom is where they come from.If this root problem one if possible to cut it like 10-15 feet from patio this way it will keep some of the life to that root, and give you room that is needed, that root would take for ever to get back to your patio and house.
The only way to get rid of the root completly is cut it off at the tree and remove the whole length to your patio.
Sounds like alot of work, maybe get a stump grinder, then just grind it where you want it removed at to where you want it stopped, they work slick.Let me know how it "GROWS" I mean go's.
