We are getting ready to remodel a house that had chain smokers living in it for over 20 years. We have been advised to completely tear out everything, even the drywall. We definitely are getting new carpet, but is it necessary to put up new drywall? We are wondering if cleaning, sealing and painting over the old walls would work. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

I would say no because your old drywall has been primed and painted so it can't get trapped in it,I would say clean it,prime and paint it.

You will need to wash the walls with amonia and water to remove as much nicotine as possible and then prime with a oil based stain killer such as Zinsser CoverStain.
