What kind of unfinished wood should I get for a kitchen butcher block? I've hear Maple is best, but its pretty expensive out here on West Coast. Would Pine work just as well?

(By the way: Great tip on this bulletin board about using "Good Stuff" to finish butcher blocks.)

Save yourself some time and aggravation. Go with a maple butcher block. Pine is just to soft for this application. The maple can takes lots of abuse and be resanded and sealed. Check out the website at www.mapleblock.com

I saw a really nice butcher block made out of recycled shipping pallet material.
