We have an old house that has 4 fireplaces in it. We are leaving the country for a few years and I was wondering how I could make the fireplaces inoperable. We are going to rent the house while we are gone and I do not want them to be able to use the fireplaces.

Not sure these are great ideas; just a couple of things I've seen over the years:

1. Padlock and chain. I've seen this done at resorts during summer months. May or may not work--given the fireplace's configuration.

2. Brick it in. Saw this once in a rental apartment a long time ago. Perhaps it can be done in such a way that it LOOKS more permanent than it is(?)

I've never had rental property (so I'm no expert)--but I'd guess most such measures are circumventable by determined renters; perhaps you should put something in your lease agreement as well. (Hopefully they'd honor lease conditions--not so sure about that one either!)

Good luck! Where are you heading? :)

We are going to put something in the lease. Since we paid so much to renovate the place, I didn't want a renter to accidently burn the place down before we got to live there.

Thank you for your suggestions
