We are thinking of buying a home and the only thing holding us back is the wetland septic system. We have never heard of it or know anything about it. Will it have a sewer odor at all times? And what kind of maintenance will it require? Is this something that is supose to last a long time?

Interesting!, I had never heard of such a thing. I have been on (typical) septic systems before in a couple of homes--my experience with them is that they are great as long as they don't give you trouble--in which case they can get expensive (this isn't much help to you, I know!). You might try the plumbing forum to see if anyone there has experience with them.

I really don't know anything about these other than that there are a number of different types of systems other than the classic leach field.
There are mound systems, filter system, packing treatment systems, and many others.
You best bet is to check with the local health department or whatever organization that approves septic systems in your area.
Find out what types of systems are approved in your area for your needs.
They find out people that install them and find out the cost and maintance requirments.
Also if this is a designated Wetlands Area and not just a wet area then there might be other organizations that need to approve any construction and/or sewage system.

But the same thing holds, start with the local agency that permits septic systems. In some places septics need to be recertified on sale so check on that.
And check with the installers of that system.
But you need to get the EXACT brand or trade name for the type of system that the house has.
Wetland septic system sounds more like a generic term for one that will work in a wet area, and not a specific type of system.
