I recently moved into a townhouse and came across a problem with the toilet. It appears that water is leaking around the flapper. Instead of replacing it. I would like to clean the bottem of the flapper to see if it stops the leak. What should be used on a rubber flapper to properly clean it?

From my experience it not buildup on the flapper that causes them to leak.

Rather the flappers is sitff and hard.

In most cases there are only a few dollars and a minute to replace.
