I have an 80-year-old home with dark wood celings and walls that is being renovated to live in. The home currently has no smoke/carbon monoxide detectors and I would like to install some. I would prefer to have brown detectors so as not to stand out like a sore thumb. Any ideas where to find them, if they even exist? I have searched and searched with no luck so far. Thanks!

You pose an interesting enough question--as many smoke detectors as there are on the market, I don't think I've ever seen one that wasn't white!

I found some info online about the "Bosch 500 series" smoke detectors - which are flush-mounted and therefore less visible than your average detector. Take a look at

http://www.boschsecurity.us/index.aspx?prdctid=3473

(If you can find them, those are available in CO-detecting "flavors" as well.)

There also seem to be a few others on the horizon (I searched on "Designer smoke detector" and other keywords). Not sure any of them are available yet. But alas, as of now, I think they are all still white.

Until smoke detector makers realize that looks are important too, I suggest putting up a smoke detector (even an ugly one). They do save lives. And, please, NEVER paint a smoke detector.

Good luck!

If you decide to go with the Boosch note that is only for smoke dectors. You need the central unit and powersupply to make it a whole system.

You need to check with the local inspectors to see if that will qualify for a residential fire alarm system.
