I've been noticing a sour / vinegar odor on everything in my son's bedroom as well as our master bedroom. I can't smell it when I walk in the rooms; there is a dusty film that has settled on everything. I can feel it on everything I handle in those rooms & smell it on my hands. We run "cool mist" humidifiers at night. Our son is 6 months old and we completely gutted & renovated the 2nd floor before he was born, so everything has been replaced, from drywall to carpet. The smell is stronger in his room. Once I dust the surface with a wet rag it's gone....but keeps coming back. Could this be from the humidifiers? Odors from the new paint & carpet, etc.? I'd appreciate any ideas.

Thanks! ;)

Interesting. New caulk will sometimes smell like vinegar for a little while. Usually it isn't a big deal and goes away. I wonder if there are big globs of it around?--like around windows? New carpeting, adhesives and other things also emit odors for a while--not necessarily vinegary but they do have a smell.

Not sure if these would be the cause. If it's the carpet, I'd keep vacuuming it (like every day) for a while.

As for humidifiers...not sure about that one.

It sounds obvious, but see if you can follow your nose to exact location(s)....good luck.

I'm wondering about the paint you used.

Sometimes old latex paint or drywall mud can have a chemical change, usually after a hard freez in the can makes it begin to separate. The smell from it is usually more like urea though.

If the humidifier, it would smell every where and especially near the unit. Do you use a water conditioner for this? Those are a vinegar type acid base. Too much of that kind of treatment would add a vinegar smell.

Excellence is its own reward!
