I have a house from 1920 which used to have an outdoor access to the basement. I don't know when, but eventually that was eliminated, and a staircase was added inside. However to put it in, the main support beam was cut and that was where the stairs were put in. Now the whole house is sloping towards where the staircase is because of the lack of support. What has to be done?

Greetings Greg,

Yikes.

I suggest you post this in the FOUNDATIONS forum; there's a better chance that some pros might see your post.

Is it possible you can supply a picture of the area? Best if it would show the cut beam and the footing. Does the footing now have nothing on it? were vertical column(s) between footing and the beam also removed to put the stairway in?

Correcting this situation should involve some very competent help....good luck.

Regards,
