My fiance and I recently purchased a brand new home. It is yet to be built, but we have seen the master bath and both feel the basic tub doesn't do the home justice. The question we have is, how much money and effort would it take to have the builder make this bathroom more desirable with a walk-in shower? I am actually willing to purchase the tile and install the tile....would it take that much out of the builder to have the shower prepped? What kind of cost difference would I be encountering?

first of all it depends on the builder and how they have structured things.
For tract housing they often have relatively high cost on the upgrades.
If it is a HIGH volumne tract builder they might not want to do this at all. Like a Chinese restruant; one from column A, one from column B, and one from column C. No substitures, no special orders. They don't have any way in there system to do anything other than what they offer.
Other builders might not want anything to do with the liability of any future leaks. Is it work that they did or work that you did?
But in some parts of the country home sales are slow enough that they will bend over backwards to do whatever is needed to satisfy you.
BTW, tubs only need 1 1/2" drain, while shower need 2". So make sure that is available.

In addition to Bill's comments, building a walk-in shower is tricky and is a job for a pro. There might even be structural issues depending on where it is (if a built-up "mud" base needs to be contructed, it could be quite heavy).
Even pro installations can leak at times, and fixing these can be a pain.
