The plans for my new home call for 3 pieces of 6"x10" timber to be cantilevered out 15" of the first floor ceiling frame (2x12) for a small balcony for a bedroom. There are a number of sawmills locally that can cut this timber for me - my main concern is what species should I use for durability since this is structurally part of the framing & I don't want to be replacing it every 10-20 years because of rot. It will be painted/stained and flashed on top w/ copper, but the sides, butt end & bottom will be exposed to weather. Suggestions please.
