My wife does some "heavy-duty" cooking, and our standard GE vent/microwave combo's 300CFM venting power just doesn't cut it. Anyway to increase the rating other than changing the vent/microwave combo out? I heard that I may be able to attach a "gable fan" to the outside of the house where the vent exhaust is located. Will this work? Would it be a DIY project? Thanks.

300 cfm is actually a lot of air to be throwing out of the house. If you have a modern, fairly tight house, it would help to open a window in the kitchen when you want to get the smells out.
Another low-tech solution is to make sure the the vent hood is pulling air from over the stove top, like you want, instead of just ****ing out the room air. You need to make a shield of some sort to do that, or lower the hood. If your stove top is against a wall, you could add a removeable stainless steel panel to one or both sides of the range, and you would find that it makes a big difference. Get the panels as "stove backsplash trim" at home depot, and you can store them with the cookie sheets. It will only be necessary to haul them out when she's frying that liver and cod cosserole.
