I could joke that it hums because it doesn't know the words, But on a serious note - The ice maker on our 6 year old GE frig hums while it rotates the cubes.

Does it make sense to just jog down to the appliance parts store and purchase an entire new ice making unit, replace the motor (?) or just wait until it expires?

I assume the humming is a warning that cube-less days are coming.

Your choice, but if it was me I'd let it go until it fails. It might last another 2 years. Then replace the unit, not just the motor. They're not very expensive.

yeah i would wait till it kicks and then replace it as long as it works
