I have a house that was built in 1968 and the range hood has been here ever since. Its old.
the problem is it is about 42 inches wide and all the new ones are 30 inches. What do i do with the gap if i replace it?

You can still buy 42" hoods (see the link below) as well as 36" and 48".

If installing a smaller hood, I have no idea what you'd fill in the extra space with. You'd probably have to use you imagination to try to make something that doesn't look too out of place with the rest of your kitchen.
