buying older house with old double wall-oven and cooktop. Wanting to install single wall-oven and microwave. Instead of buying what seem to be quite expensive microwave/wall-oven combos, is it possible for a built-in microwave to somehow be put over the wall-oven (and how?), or would an over-the-range be better? My step-dad is doing the remodeling/repairs in the house but he was unsure about this. Any help greatly appreciated!

- built-in microwave vs. over-the-range
Sounds like what I plan to do. Instead of replacing a double oven though, I am remodeling the kitchen and removing a freestanding range and putting in a jennair gas cooktop and in the wall jenn-air oven. I am building the cabinet so the microwave oven I have now, an over the stove convection oven/microwave, will sit above the oven. I am going to create a gap between the two ovens and install a grill between the 2 ovens for the vent on the microwave and enough space for it to work along with the ducting going up an out of the house.
We are about to do this also. Have done some research and know that several manufacturers offer a 'trim kit' to allow their models to be built-in like a wall oven. Am looking at a Sharp model now that is 2.0 cubic ft and fits in a 30 inch cabinet - with the trim kit.

There are models of microwave ovens specificaly designed (ie. vent through the front) to be built in as an optional mothod of instalation. See the following link:

Unless they're specifically designed for that type of installation, the best you could do would be to hang one under a counter (but not above a range).
