top fridge bottom freezer, advice??
Chest freezers are the most efficient (see the following). If you go with an upright, I suggest you get a frost free model.
From a quick comparison I did from information posted at Frigidaire's web site.
20 cu.ft chest freezer uses 490 kWh/year
20 cu.ft upright freezer uses 763 kWh/year
just for comparison:
EnergyStar 20 cu.ft. Top-freezer fridge 458 kWh/year
Regular 20 cu.ft. Top-freezer fridge 509 kWh/year
23 cu.ft. Side by side 686 kWh/year

A drawer is usually what those are referred to rather than a chest.
I've heard many bottom freezer models with a freezer drawer have been having problems with the drawer's tracks. I don't know if the current models are made any differently now or not.
